Chinese EV makers dominate Paris Motor Show with rapid charging and tech, while European brands lean on heritage models
At the Paris Motor Show, Chinese manufacturers including BYD, Zeekr, and Li Auto showcased advanced EV technology such as BYD's 10% to 97% charge in 9 minutes and Li Auto's i6 charging 10% to 80% in under 11 minutes. Zeekr displayed the 9X ultra plug in hybrid with 111 mile electric range. European brands including Renault, Peugeot, Citroen, and Alpine responded by emphasising heritage models and reinterpretations rather than competing on charging speed or technical specifications.
Why it matters
The technology gap shown at Paris signals that European CPOs and fleet operators may increasingly source vehicles from Chinese manufacturers to meet rapid charging and range demands. European automakers' focus on heritage rather than charging infrastructure compatibility could affect procurement decisions for public and commercial charging networks across the continent.
Opel to unveil electric estate concept at Paris 2026, dropping saloon body style
Opel will present the STX concept at the 2026 Paris Motor Show, previewing the next generation Astra as an electric estate car only. The German Stellantis brand is discontinuing the saloon body style but continuing its estate heritage, which dates to the 1954 Olympia Rekord Caravan. Opel claims the electric estate will rival SUVs on efficiency grounds.
Why it matters
A shift to electric only estates could influence charging infrastructure planning if estate buyers adopt EVs at scale. The move also signals how legacy manufacturers are repositioning compact segments around electrification rather than abandoning them to SUVs.
