EV Charging

SINTEF and Vard develop magnetic charging plug for offshore wind service vessels

Researchers at SINTEF and Vard have prototyped a magnetic charging connection designed to enable electric Service Operation Vessels to charge at offshore wind farms without returning to port. The Ocean Charger project addresses mechanical wear, corrosion and maintenance challenges that make traditional plug connections impractical in open sea conditions. The technology could also serve Platform Supply Vessels in the oil sector.

Why it matters

Offshore charging infrastructure would extend the operational range of battery electric vessels servicing wind farms, reducing downtime and creating demand for marine charging equipment that withstands saltwater and wave motion. Procurement teams planning offshore wind O and M contracts may soon specify vessels compatible with at sea charging systems.
