UL Standards & Engagement released UL 1741 Supplement SC in May 2026, covering AC bidirectional electric vehicle supply equipment for EVs with SAE J3072 bidirectional onboard inverters. The standard addresses AC vehicle to grid systems, where inverter functions sit onboard the EV, and is expected to support interoperability and catalyse a low cost, scalable V2G AC market. Utilities in California, Maryland, New York, Massachusetts and Connecticut have clarified treatment for V2G DC systems, with AC applications now gaining regulatory attention.
Why it matters: Charge point operators and fleet managers can now plan AC V2G deployments with clearer technical requirements, reducing reliance on proprietary hardware from individual automakers. The standard paves the way for utility interconnection agreements and revenue opportunities from grid services, expanding the business case for bidirectional charging infrastructure.
