Procurement & pipeline

Generational, a UK battery diagnostics firm, analysed roughly 10,000 used EV battery tests from UK dealerships and found that around one in 85 vehicles shows a cell level imbalance above 50 millivolts, a fault invisible to standard State of Health reporting. The median tested vehicle recorded just 8 millivolts difference between highest and lowest cells, but approximately one in 200 tests revealed imbalances above 100 millivolts, indicating potential underlying faults. CEO Oliver Phillpott noted that State of Health metrics measure overall capacity but do not detect whether individual cells within a pack are functioning correctly.

Why it matters: Fleet operators and charge point operators procuring or managing used EVs face hidden battery risks that standard diagnostics miss, potentially affecting vehicle range, charging performance and residual value. The findings highlight a gap in pre purchase testing that could influence warranty provisions and asset management strategies across the second hand EV market.

Rollout pace

Kempower's white paper, analysing real world data from its North American public charging sites via ChargEye software, found that the number of charging plugs has approximately three times more impact on site utilization than total installed power. Sites using Kempower's distributed architecture, which dynamically shares power between multiple charging points, achieved 83% higher utilization on average than those with fixed power dispensers. The findings were released on 31 August 2026.

Why it matters: For CPOs and site planners, the data suggests that maximizing plug count and deploying dynamic power sharing architectures can significantly improve utilization and site economics compared to simply installing higher power capacity. The research provides quantifiable evidence to inform procurement decisions and site design strategies as operators focus on profitability.
