Procurement & pipeline

Hyundai Motor Company announced new in-house battery cells at its 2026 CEO Investor Day in Seoul that deliver more than double the output of previous high-nickel cells and cut charging time by 40%. The cells will debut in Extended Range Electric Vehicle models in the first half of 2027, using less than half the battery capacity of comparable full-electric vehicles, while 2027 EV models will use mid-nickel NCM cells that reduce battery cost by around 30%. Hyundai also revealed a cloud-based battery management system upgrade targeting 20% longer battery life by 2028 and a new Thermal Runaway Protection safety technology.

Why it matters: Faster charging and lower battery costs directly affect the business case for fleet electrification and the infrastructure load profiles that charge-point operators must plan for. Hyundai's shift to mid-nickel chemistry and extended battery life could reduce total cost of ownership for commercial buyers and influence procurement specifications across the sector.
