Major automakers and battery manufacturers are targeting 2027 to 2030 for small-scale production of all-solid-state batteries, with full-scale mass manufacturing expected from 2030 onwards. Solid-state batteries promise higher energy density, improved safety and faster charging compared to current lithium-ion technologies, including lithium-iron phosphate batteries. Some products marketed as solid-state batteries are already reaching the market, though these are not true all-solid-state batteries.
Why it matters: EV infrastructure planners and charge point operators must factor in a decade-long transition period before solid-state technology reaches mass production, meaning current charging network designs should accommodate lithium-ion battery characteristics through at least 2030. The faster charging capabilities promised by solid-state batteries may eventually require infrastructure upgrades to deliver higher power outputs.
