IEC publishes megawatt charging standard to support electric HGV deployment
The International Electrotechnical Commission has released IEC TS 63379:2026, a new standard covering vehicle connectors, inlets and cable assemblies for megawatt level DC charging. The specification establishes a common technical framework for Megawatt Charging Systems (MCS) designed to handle the higher power requirements of heavy goods vehicles, buses, off highway machinery and marine vessels. MAN Truck & Bus described megawatt charging as a game changer for long distance freight, addressing the need to replenish large HGV batteries within commercially practical timescales.
Why it matters
A unified international standard removes a key barrier to HGV charging infrastructure procurement by giving operators and charge point developers a common technical specification for high power applications. The framework should accelerate investment decisions and supply chain readiness for megawatt scale charging networks needed to support battery electric commercial vehicle fleets.
