Rollout pace

Electric vehicle adoption is accelerating in Assam, India, driven by daily cost savings rather than state incentives, according to drivers and experts. E-autorickshaw driver Tasem Ali covers almost 100 kilometres per charge and reports lower running costs than diesel alternatives, though monthly instalments on vehicles costing around Rs 4 lakh remain a burden. Assam's 2021 EV policy promised subsidies, tax waivers and registration fee exemptions, but several owners report not receiving subsidies or lacking clarity on benefits, while poor charging infrastructure, limited financing and range anxiety continue to slow adoption, especially for four-wheelers.

Why it matters: The gap between EV uptake and policy delivery in Assam signals that organic demand from total cost of ownership is outrunning public infrastructure and incentive programmes, a pattern that may inform procurement priorities and financing models for charge point operators entering similar emerging markets. The reliance on home charging and the 100 kilometre daily range of three-wheelers also highlight where public charging investment may lag real user behaviour.

Hyundai Motor India Limited has expanded its myHyundai mobile application to provide access to more than 30,000 EV charging points across India, available to all EV brands. The aggregated network, built through partnerships with multiple charge point operators, offers charging within an average 25 kilometre radius and covers key intercity highway routes. Hyundai also operates 183 DC fast charging stations (60 kW to 240 kW) across 105 cities, all open to any manufacturer's vehicles.

Why it matters: The aggregation model demonstrates how OEMs can drive interoperability and reduce app fragmentation for EV drivers, potentially influencing procurement strategies for fleets and public networks. Coverage of intercity corridors and open access to Hyundai's own 183 fast chargers signals growing infrastructure maturity in a major emerging EV market.
