UK government allocates £10 million for off grid EV charging technology on strategic road network
The UK government announced £10 million in funding on 3 November 2025 to support cutting edge technology enabling EV chargers to operate without large grid connections or entirely off grid. The programme targets England's motorways and major A roads, aiming to overcome grid constraint challenges and accelerate chargepoint rollout in rural areas. The announcement follows data showing the UK network reached 86,021 chargers, a 23% increase over the past year, with rural areas in Yorkshire, the North West, Scotland and Wales seeing the strongest growth.
Why it matters
Off grid charging solutions could unlock strategic road network sites previously constrained by grid capacity, creating new procurement opportunities for CPOs and technology providers. The funding addresses a key barrier to rapid charging deployment in high demand motorway and rural corridor locations where grid reinforcement costs and timelines often delay projects.
