UK EV charging signage lags behind 88,500 public points and 765 rapid hubs, risking driver confidence
Britain now has around 88,500 public EV charging points across more than 45,000 locations as of January 2026, including 765 rapid charging hubs, up 41% in a year. Despite this infrastructure growth, wayfinding signage on A roads and motorways remains inconsistent or absent, unlike petrol station signs. Industry voices argue that visible road signage is essential to build mainstream driver confidence and signal the electric transition to the mass market.
Why it matters
For charge point operators and site developers, poor wayfinding undermines utilisation of existing assets and slows the business case for new hubs. Clear signage policy could accelerate demand, justify further investment, and help the sector reach drivers beyond early adopters.
Waymo apologises after fleet vehicles occupy London taxi-only charging bays
Autonomous vehicle operator Waymo has apologised after its electric vehicles were found using rapid chargepoints in London reserved exclusively for licensed black taxis. The company confirmed two instances of the breach and said it had raised the matter with its third-party fleet operator, which has implemented strict policies to prevent recurrence. Under London regulations, only licensed black cabs may use the dedicated charging bays, which were installed to support the taxi trade's shift to zero-emission capable vehicles.
Why it matters
The incident highlights operational compliance risks when third-party fleet managers access public charging infrastructure with restricted use policies. For CPOs and local authorities, it underscores the need for access-control systems that can enforce user eligibility at dedicated charging sites.
