Nevada allocated over 130 million dollars for EV charging but few stations built years after approval
In 2021, Nevada lawmakers approved more than 100 million dollars for NV Energy to build EV charging stations, targeting underserved communities, with additional tens of millions in federal infrastructure grants. More than a year past the project's scheduled completion, few chargers have been delivered, leaving Nevada's 65,000 EV drivers facing unreliable rural charging on routes such as US 95 between Tonopah and Las Vegas and US 93 between Las Vegas and Wells. No official state or federal site tracks station locations or operational status.
Why it matters
The delayed rollout highlights execution risk in utility led charging programmes, even when funding exceeds 130 million dollars, and underscores the need for transparent project tracking and accountability mechanisms. Procurement teams and CPOs should scrutinise delivery timelines and operational reporting requirements when evaluating large scale charging contracts.
