Boynton Beach becomes first Florida city to join Charging Smart programme for EV infrastructure planning
Boynton Beach, Florida, enrolled in the Interstate Renewable Energy Council's Charging Smart programme in February 2025, becoming the first city in the state to do so. The initiative helps local governments improve EV policies, permitting, infrastructure planning and fleet electrification. The city already operates 12 public charging ports through a partnership with Florida Power & Light, but officials cited limited control over maintenance, usage data and repair schedules, including one heavily used charger that remained offline for nearly three months.
Why it matters
The move signals growing municipal demand for structured frameworks to manage public charging networks and procurement processes. Cities seeking greater operational control over charging assets may increasingly look beyond utility partnerships to direct ownership or performance based contracts.
