California's AB 1820 targets permitting fees for multifamily EV charging, Moon Five calls it a good start
In September, Governor Gavin Newsom introduced the MyFirstEV programme to incentivise new EV customers and signed several bills to simplify charger installation. One of them, the Electric Vehicle Charger Affordability Act (AB 1820), aims to cut permitting barriers and fees for charging projects at apartments and mixed use developments. Stephan Ng, CEO and founder of Moon Five, which provides charging for apartment buildings and rental properties in the US, described the legislation as a "good start" while outlining the extra barriers residents of multifamily properties face.
Why it matters
Lower permitting costs and fewer fees could improve the economics of charger projects at apartment and rental sites, a segment where installation is more complex. CPOs and procurement teams targeting multifamily should watch how AB 1820 is applied in practice.
