BYD DaHan achieves 56% of claimed range in Chinese highway test, trailing Xiaomi and Tesla

By Eve

Chinese automotive platform Autohome conducted a highway range test on 14 October comparing the BYD DaHan, Xiaomi SU7 and Tesla Model 3. The BYD DaHan RWD achieved 566.4 km against its 1,008 km CLTC rating (56.2% retention), while the Xiaomi SU7 Pro RWD reached 678.6 km of its 902 km claim (75.2%) and the Tesla Model 3 Long Range RWD covered 527.8 km of its 830 km rating (63.6%). The test took place on highways around Beijing with speed limits of 100 to 120 km/h, with all vehicles driven to near zero battery.

Why it matters

Real world highway range performance directly affects fleet operators' route planning and charging infrastructure requirements. The wide variance between CLTC ratings and actual highway results, particularly BYD's 44% shortfall, underscores the need for procurement teams to factor in conservative range assumptions when specifying charging networks for commercial EV deployments.

BYD to launch Denza N8 EV with 623 mile range and 1,500 kW flash charging

BYD is set to launch the Denza N8 EV next week, a five seat luxury electric SUV with a CLTC range of 623 miles (1,003 km) using a 130.15 kWh battery and second generation Blade Batteries. The vehicle features BYD's 1,500 kW Flash Charging Technology, which can charge from 10% to 70% in five minutes and 10% to 97% in nine minutes. The Denza N8 EV will be available in single rear wheel drive or tri motor all wheel drive configurations, with the RWD version offering either 320 kW or 370 kW motors, according to a regulatory filing from China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology in August.

Why it matters

The Denza N8 EV's ultra fast charging capability and extended range could set new benchmarks for charging infrastructure requirements, potentially driving demand for higher power charging installations. CPOs and equipment suppliers may need to evaluate compatibility with BYD's 1,500 kW charging standard as the technology enters the market.

BYD Malaysia and Gentari sign MoU to deploy 1,500 kW Flash Charging at highway sites

BYD Malaysia and Gentari, a Petronas subsidiary, have signed a memorandum of understanding in Shenzhen to explore deployment of ultra-fast DC chargers operating at up to 1,500 kW. The chargers can top up compatible BYD or Denza vehicles from 10% to 70% in five minutes and to 97% in nine minutes. Sites under consideration include key intercity corridors and highway rest areas, in addition to selected BYD and Denza dealers, with battery energy storage systems to support grid stability.

Why it matters

The partnership signals Malaysia's first move towards ultra-fast charging infrastructure capable of 1,500 kW output, targeting highway corridors where rapid turnaround is critical for long distance EV adoption. For CPOs and infrastructure planners, the integration of battery energy storage systems alongside these chargers offers a model for deploying high power charging without grid reinforcement costs.

BYD unveils Atto 8 with 670 kW average charging and 115 kWh battery, requiring new FLASH infrastructure

BYD presented the Atto 8, a 5.04 metre seven seat electric SUV, at the Paris Motor Show on 12 October, with deliveries planned for the first quarter of 2027. The vehicle features a second generation 115 kWh LFP Blade battery and FLASH charging technology that delivers 10% to 70% charge in five minutes and reaches 97% in nine minutes, averaging approximately 670 kW and exceeding 800 kW in the initial phase. At minus 30 degrees Celsius, the system achieves 20% to 97% charge in 12 minutes, three minutes longer than normal conditions.

Why it matters

The 670 kW to 800 kW charging requirement sets a new infrastructure benchmark well beyond current family EV standards, signalling potential demand for ultra high power charging networks if BYD scales deployment. CPOs and site developers will need to assess whether FLASH compatible hardware investments align with broader fleet adoption timelines ahead of the 2027 launch.
