Tamil Nadu targets 20,000 public EV charging stations over five years under PPP model

The Tamil Nadu government has announced plans to deploy 20,000 public EV charging stations across the state over five years through a public private partnership model, with Rs 50 crore allocated in the current financial year. Tamil Nadu Green Energy Corporation Limited is identifying sites on government land, highways and in major cities including Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai and Tiruchy, aiming to establish around 1,000 stations in the first phase within seven months. An additional Rs 5 crore has been earmarked for subsidies to Resident Welfare Associations to install charging infrastructure in residential complexes.
Why it matters: The state backed rollout signals a major tender pipeline for charge point operators and equipment suppliers in southern India, with the first phase procurement expected within months. The PPP structure and dedicated subsidy for residential sites offer multiple entry points for private sector deployment at scale.
