India allocates ₹2,000 crore for EV charging under ₹10,900 crore PM E-DRIVE scheme targeting 72,000 chargers

India's government has earmarked ₹2,000 crore for public EV charging infrastructure within the PM E-DRIVE scheme's total ₹10,900 crore allocation. The programme will support around 72,000 chargers, including approximately 22,100 fast chargers for four-wheelers, 48,400 for two-wheelers and three-wheelers, and 1,800 for e-buses, with subsidies varying by location and infrastructure type. Industry estimates suggest India could need 1.3 million to over 2 million public charging points by 2030, meaning the current target represents only 3.6% to 5.5% of projected demand.
Why it matters: The scheme creates immediate procurement opportunities for charge-point operators and equipment suppliers across urban, highway and commercial sites, though the scale falls well short of industry forecasts requiring 300,000 to 400,000 annual installations. CPOs and contractors will need to assess subsidy structures and site categories to position for tenders under the ₹2,000 crore infrastructure allocation.
