45 per cent of Indian homes require electrical upgrades for EV charging, study finds

A study by the Alliance for an Energy Efficient Economy and Kazam, analysing over 80,000 residential EV charger installations across Indian cities, has found that nearly 45 per cent of homes need electrical upgrades to safely charge electric vehicles. The research, released as Delhi prepares to stop registering petrol and CNG three wheelers from January 2027 and two wheelers from April 2028, highlights that legacy electrical infrastructure, housing design and governance arrangements constrain safe residential charging despite rapid EV adoption.
Why it matters: The finding underscores a critical infrastructure gap that could slow residential EV uptake and shift charging demand to public networks, directly affecting CPO site planning and load forecasting. Procurement teams may need to factor in grid reinforcement costs and prioritise locations where home charging is less viable.
