US EV sales hit 12 per cent market share in Q3 2025 despite automaker retrenchments

By Eve

Electric vehicle sales in the United States reached a record in the third quarter of 2025, capturing approximately 12 per cent of the market, according to Car and Driver's January/February 2026 issue. Analyst Loren McDonald of Chargeonomics estimated that up to 125,000 EV sales were pulled forward into Q3 before the $7,500 federal purchase incentive ended on 30 September. Despite this growth, North American automakers, particularly the Detroit Three, have delayed or cancelled electric vehicle plans and models.

Why it matters: The Q3 sales spike driven by expiring federal incentives signals potential volatility in near term EV adoption, which may affect charging infrastructure deployment timelines and utilisation forecasts for CPOs planning network expansion. The pullback from major automakers could reshape the competitive landscape for charging providers as the pace and geography of electrification becomes more uneven across vehicle segments.
