BESS paired EV charging hits 1GWh globally as China plans 10GWh rollout

By Eve

Battery energy storage systems paired with EV charging infrastructure have reached nearly 1GWh of capacity across China, France, the US and the UK, according to BloombergNEF's Energy Storage Outlook H1 2026 report. The firm tracked 978MWh in those four major markets plus 22MWh elsewhere, though actual totals may be higher due to incomplete data. China has announced over 10GWh of future BESS paired charging projects, with Europe planning 1.5GWh, the UK 365MWh and the US just 45MWh.

Why it matters: BESS integration allows CPOs to secure faster or smaller grid connections, optimise charging patterns for price signals and ancillary services, and better utilise on-site solar generation. The 10 to 1 ratio between China's pipeline and current global capacity signals where procurement volume and technical innovation in grid integrated charging will concentrate over the next development cycle.
