BMW to invest over €100 million in Austrian plant for in-house inverter power module production

By Eve

BMW Group will invest more than €100 million at its Steyr, Austria plant to begin assembling inverter power modules for Gen6 electric motors in summer 2029. The facility, which currently supplies over one million combustion engines annually, will add a new assembly line in a clean room and take over upstream supply chain operations for the modules that control energy flow between high voltage batteries and motors in Neue Klasse vehicles. The investment includes new manufacturing processes such as large area soldering and ultrasonic welding for assembling the module's 10 individual parts.

Why it matters

The vertical integration move signals BMW's strategy to control critical EV powertrain components in house, potentially creating procurement opportunities for clean room infrastructure, specialised welding equipment and supply chain partners at the Austrian facility. The 2029 timeline provides a clear planning horizon for suppliers targeting BMW's Neue Klasse production ramp.

BMW iX7 three-row electric SUV spotted testing ahead of mid-2027 debut

BMW's first three-row electric SUV, the iX7, has been photographed testing at the Nürburgring in Germany, with an official launch expected in mid-2027. The full-size luxury model is anticipated to use a dual-motor all-wheel-drive powertrain similar to the smaller iX5 60 xDrive, which delivers 578 hp and 593 lb-ft of torque, enabling 0 to 60 mph in 4.4 seconds. The iX5 is powered by a 144 kWh battery offering up to 435 miles of range and uses an 800V electrical system for fast charging.

Why it matters

The iX7's 800V architecture and 144 kWh battery capacity signal demand for high-power charging infrastructure capable of serving premium, long-range electric SUVs. CPOs and site hosts targeting luxury segments should prepare for vehicles requiring ultra-rapid charging to match the convenience expectations of three-row SUV buyers.

BMW India locally assembles 2026 i7 electric sedan, prices i7 50 xDrive at Rs 1.95 crore to match petrol 740

BMW has begun local assembly of the 2026 i7 facelift in India, pricing the i7 50 xDrive variant at Rs 1.95 crore, identical to the petrol 740 model. The company anticipates increased adoption of the electric version due to price parity with its combustion counterpart. The move reflects BMW's strategy to expand electric vehicle availability in the Indian market through local production.

Why it matters

Price parity between electric and petrol luxury vehicles at the Rs 1.95 crore segment signals growing cost competitiveness for premium EVs, potentially accelerating demand for charging infrastructure at high end residential and commercial locations. Local assembly of luxury EVs in India may indicate broader market maturation and infrastructure investment opportunities.
