CATL unveils Tectrans II battery with 7 minute charge for light commercial EVs

Chinese battery manufacturer CATL has announced its Tectrans II battery technology for electric light commercial vehicles, achieving 20% to 80% charge in under seven minutes and reaching 100% in nine minutes total, according to CNEVPost. By comparison, the Ford E-Transit requires 28 minutes for 10% to 80% charge, whilst the Rivian EDV is limited to 100 kW charging power and discontinued Chevrolet BrightDrop vans needed one hour to recover 260 km of range.
Why it matters: The technology represents a step change in charging speed for the commercial fleet segment, potentially reducing depot dwell times and enabling higher vehicle utilisation rates. Procurement teams evaluating charging infrastructure for light commercial fleets may need to assess whether existing installations can support the higher power demands this battery chemistry will require.
