Chery unveils 1.44MW Volt-dragon charging system, China's second fastest battery tech

By Eve

Chery, China's fifth largest carmaker, has launched its Volt-dragon battery and charging system, capable of adding 311 miles of range in five minutes and charging from 10% to 97% in 6 minutes 50 seconds. The system supports 800V or 1,000V vehicle architectures and ranks second fastest in China behind CATL's third generation battery (6 minutes 27 seconds for 10% to 98%), though BYD and Geely offer more powerful systems at 1.5MW and 2.25MW respectively. Chery plans to open 100 Volt-dragon charging stations and will incorporate robotic charging arms and vehicle to grid technology.

Why it matters

The announcement intensifies competition in China's megawatt charging infrastructure market, with five major manufacturers now deploying ultra fast systems that could reshape procurement specifications for public and commercial charging networks. Chery's planned 100 station rollout adds another significant CPO entrant to a rapidly consolidating market where charging speed and power output are becoming key differentiators.

Chery demonstrates megawatt charging claiming 500 km range in five minutes at Wuhu site

On 20 October at its Wuhu facility in China, Chery presented Volt-dragon, a megawatt level charging technology claiming 500 km of range recovered in five minutes. The demonstration station, shown during the Global Innovation Conference (19 to 23 October), combines solar generation, battery storage and bidirectional V2G capability in a microgrid. The technology remains a demonstration at a manufacturer site rather than a public service, with exact power figures varying across secondary reports.

Why it matters

Megawatt charging demonstrations by automakers signal the technical direction for ultra-fast infrastructure, though procurement teams should note this remains a controlled site trial rather than a deployable commercial standard. The integration of solar, storage and V2G in the demonstration points to future site design requirements for high power charging hubs.

Chery Tiggo X7 PHEV targets UK market with rugged design and off-road capability

Chery is preparing to launch the Tiggo X7 plug-in hybrid in the UK, marking the first of its premium focused X models following success from sister brands Omoda and Jaecoo. The vehicle features six off-road drive modes including Snow, Mud, Sand, Rocks and Water Wading, suggesting all-wheel-drive capability, with a 1,300kg towing capacity. The rugged SUV is positioned to compete with Volkswagen and Toyota in the lifestyle vehicle segment.

Why it matters

The UK launch signals growing Chinese OEM competition in the premium PHEV segment, potentially driving demand for workplace and destination charging infrastructure to support lifestyle oriented buyers. Fleet operators and charging point operators may need to plan for increased PHEV charging requirements as more rugged electrified models enter the market.

Solar powered EV charging in Andhra Pradesh still at an early stage despite favourable conditions

A report on Nellore says Andhra Pradesh has abundant sunshine, a growing renewable energy ecosystem and rising interest in electric mobility, but solar powered charging remains nascent. Stations use rooftop or ground mounted solar panels with Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) to smooth fluctuations, drawing from the grid only when necessary. The article notes that public charging infrastructure in the state remains sporadic despite growing EV sales and strong government backing, and that Convergence Energy Services Ltd. (CESL), a subsidiary of Energy Efficiency Services Ltd. (EESL), was the first to deploy an integrated solar powered charging station in India.

Why it matters

Lower electricity costs at solar and BESS equipped sites could let charge point operators pass savings on to drivers, which makes Andhra Pradesh a potential market for integrated solar plus storage charging projects. The patchy public network, particularly for intercity travel, points to unmet demand for developers and funders.
