Chinese EV makers now quote charging times in seconds as sub five minute top ups arrive
By Eve
Geely's new Golden Brick battery charges from 10% to 70% in 4 minutes and 22 seconds, while BYD's Blade 2.0 manages the same range in 5 minutes. CATL has demonstrated a consumer battery capable of 10% to 80% in 3 minutes and 44 seconds, though it is not yet in production vehicles, and a commercial cell achieving 20% to 80% in 6 minutes and 48 seconds at an 8C rate.
Why it matters: Sub five minute charging windows shift the infrastructure planning calculus for charge point operators, potentially reducing dwell times and increasing site throughput. Procurers evaluating ultra rapid hardware must now consider whether existing 350 kW standards will meet demand from vehicles designed for these speeds.
