Mercedes-Benz CLA passes 112 km/h side impact crash test with battery intact

Mercedes-Benz conducted a severe side impact crash test with two production CLA vehicles, each travelling at 56 km/h for a combined closing speed of 112 km/h. The test paired an all electric CLA with a CLA Shooting Brake featuring an electrified combustion engine, both weighing over two tonnes. The high voltage battery in the electric CLA remained intact despite the direct side impact, and passenger compartment integrity was maintained in both vehicles.

Why it matters

Battery safety in severe crash scenarios is a critical consideration for fleet operators and charging infrastructure planners, as it affects vehicle downtime, insurance costs and site safety protocols. Demonstrated battery resilience in real world collision conditions may influence procurement decisions for electric fleets and inform risk assessments at charging locations.
