Nigeria reaffirms local content policy for electric vehicle manufacturing

By Eve

Nigeria's Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Dr. Kingsley Udeh, told the inaugural meeting of the Electric Vehicle Assemblers and Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (EVAMAN) in Abuja that the Federal Government will support EV industry growth through policies prioritising local content, innovation, technology transfer and industrial development. Presidential Executive Order No. 5 is the main policy framework promoting indigenous capacity and local participation in science, engineering and technology projects. The Ministry is working with other government departments to embed local content requirements across clean transportation, renewable energy, advanced manufacturing and digital innovation sectors.

Why it matters: A formal local content mandate in Nigeria's EV sector will shape procurement rules for charging infrastructure and vehicle supply contracts, potentially requiring bidders to partner with Nigerian firms or source domestically. Operators planning Nigerian rollouts must factor compliance with Executive Order No. 5 into tender strategies and supply chain design.
