GM announces fourth-generation EV platform built around LMR batteries and centralised computing

By Eve

GM has announced a new fourth-generation EV platform featuring lithium manganese-rich (LMR) batteries, centralised computing and updated Super Cruise technology, with approximately 20% more range per kilowatt-hour expected from efficiency and aerodynamic gains. The prismatic LMR cells will be produced by GM's Ultium Cells joint venture with LG Energy Solution in Spring Hill, Tennessee. GM says it used computer modelling to evaluate more than 300,000 battery designs before building a physical prototype, and moved from initial pack concept to formal programme approval in one month, as reported on 3 November 2026.

Why it matters

A renewed GM commitment to EVs with roughly 20% more range per kilowatt-hour could shape future vehicle demand and charging needs in the United States. CPOs and procurement teams should watch how the platform affects vehicle energy consumption and charging behaviour once models reach the market.

GM plans hybrid models from 2027 as it widens its EV-first strategy

General Motors has hybrid nameplates on its agenda, with new models planned as early as 2027, according to Autoblog as reported by The Cool Down. The GMC Acadia, Buick Enclave and Chevrolet Traverse are built at Lansing Delta Township Assembly in Michigan, where GM is preparing for future hybrid production, though the company has not said which models will get the first gas-electric powertrains. Conventional hybrids took a 16% share of U.S. new light-duty vehicle sales in the third quarter of 2026, against 6% for fully electric vehicles, per U.S. Energy Information Administration data cited by Autoblog.

Why it matters

A shift from an EV-first stance to a mixed powertrain lineup at a major U.S. manufacturer could temper the pace of plug-in vehicle growth that charging demand forecasts rely on. Procurement teams and CPOs may want to stress-test site utilisation assumptions against a market where hybrids outsell fully electric vehicles by a wide margin.

Vauxhall passes 100,000 UK battery electric vehicle sales

Vauxhall has sold 102,852 electric vehicles in the UK as of October 2026, with the 100,000th sale a Grandland Electric 213PS Ultimate delivered by Drive Vauxhall Nuneaton. The brand reached 10,000 EV sales in 2021 and 50,000 in 2023, a tenfold rise in customer demand, and the Mokka Electric (more than 26,000 sales) and Corsa Electric (more than 23,000) lead its range of eight electric models. The figures come from Vauxhall's milestone announcement, which also cites its 2023 Electric Streets of Britain campaign inviting drivers to register the need for on-street charging.

Why it matters

A mass-market brand with over 100,000 UK EVs on the road points to a growing base of drivers, many in mainstream segments, who will need public and on-street charging. For CPOs and local authority procurement teams, the Electric Streets of Britain campaign is a signal of registered demand for on-street provision.

Mercedes-Benz India launches electric GLC from ₹78.5 lakh with over 1,000 bookings

Mercedes-Benz India has launched the electric GLC at an introductory ex-showroom price of ₹78.5 lakh, with more than 1,000 bookings taking its order book through March 2027. CEO Santosh Iyer said at the Pune launch that the company is seeking more assembly kits from its global leadership to raise local production and shorten waiting periods. The bookings carry an indicative retail value of over ₹785 crore including taxes, which is subject to final pricing and conversion into deliveries rather than recognised revenue.

Why it matters

A sold out luxury EV order book into 2027 points to a growing base of high income buyers in India who will expect reliable home and destination charging. CPOs and hosts targeting premium sites should note that deliveries begin around Diwali, with supply constrained by kit allocation rather than demand.
