Grid capacity now shapes EV charging rollout more than charger speed, says NRMA

Peter Burke, EV Infrastructure Delivery at the NRMA, told the Autel EV Innovation Seminar 2026 that grid access has become the primary constraint for charging networks, even as newer electric vehicles demand higher charging speeds and volumes. Burke noted that vehicles three to four years ago required less capacity than current models, yet grid limitations mean operators cannot simply install larger chargers. He advised that each site must be designed around demand patterns, peaks, troughs and available grid capacity rather than pursuing maximum charger output.

Why it matters: Fleet and depot planners should prioritise assessing site power capacity before specifying charger numbers or speeds, as grid constraints now dictate what infrastructure is feasible. Public charging operators face the same challenge, requiring site designs tailored to local grid availability rather than standardised high power installations.
