India approves 4,874 public EV chargers under PM E-Drive scheme with ₹504 crore funding

India's government has approved 4,874 public EV chargers under the PM E-Drive scheme, backed by ₹503.86 crore (approximately €44 million) in funding. The approvals include proposals from state oil marketing companies HPCL, IOCL and BPCL, plus eight state governments including Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. The scheme has allocated ₹2,000 crore (nearly €180 million) for public charging infrastructure, targeting deployment of more than 72,000 public chargers nationwide.
Why it matters: The approval signals a major procurement pipeline for CPOs and equipment suppliers across India's public charging sector, with state oil companies and regional governments now moving forward on funded projects. The planned Unified Bharat eCharge platform aims to standardise access and payments, which could reshape interoperability requirements for operators entering or expanding in the Indian market.
