India needs 1.32 million EV chargers by 2030 against 67,657 installed

India will require 1.32 million EV charging points by 2030, up from 67,657 installed as of August 2026, according to a Rubix Data Sciences report citing CII estimates. Public charging stations grew nearly six times from 5,000 in 2022 to 29,151 by December 2025, with Karnataka, Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh leading deployment. However, charger utilisation remains low at 1 to 5 per cent, and 73 per cent of chargers are rated below 30 kW, with only 534 units at 121 to 240 kW and nine above 240 kW.
Why it matters: The 1.25 million charger gap by 2030 signals a major procurement opportunity, though low single digit utilisation rates and the dominance of sub 30 kW hardware point to unresolved site economics and a pressing need for DC fast and ultra fast infrastructure on highways and in urban areas.
