Nio to open Shanghai battery R&D centre with 31 test labs and pilot lithium-ion line

Nio will build a new battery research and development facility in Shanghai's Anting area during the second half of the year, housing 31 testing laboratories, a pilot lithium-ion cell line and a battery pack production line. The centre will focus on next generation battery technologies, including solid state batteries with oxide and sulphide electrolytes, and will add to Nio's existing 60,000 square metre R&D footprint in Shanghai. The project forms part of Nio's battery strategy announced in March, with vehicle production remaining in Anhui province.
Why it matters: The facility signals potential procurement opportunities for laboratory equipment, pilot production machinery and testing infrastructure as Nio scales its battery development capabilities. Solid state battery research may drive demand for specialised materials and manufacturing systems distinct from conventional lithium-ion supply chains.
