iSeeCars ranks Louisville as least EV-friendly large US metro, San Francisco as most

By Eve

iSeeCars data shows San Francisco averages 334 residents per charger, the best of the 50 largest US metro areas, while Louisville, Kentucky averages 2,904 residents per charger, the worst. Los Angeles has the most chargers at 36,318 and Louisville the fewest at 621, using Level 2 and DC fast-charging ports from the US Department of Energy's Alternative Fuels Data Center. iSeeCars says network growth has slowed considerably but projects more than 40,000 new chargers by the end of 2026, taking the national total to about 299,800.

Why it matters

The gap between metros in residents per charger points to where public charging coverage is thinnest, which is useful when screening markets for site selection and bid targeting. Louisville's position at the bottom suggests demand for new capacity in under-served mid-sized metros, even as national rollout slows.

Tesla urges Australia to apply a road user charge to all vehicles alongside fuel excise

In its submission to the federal Select Committee on Productivity in Australia, Tesla recommended a distance-based road user charge, set in cents per kilometre, for all vehicles, to sit alongside the current fuel excise. The excise adds around 51 cents to each litre of petrol and diesel sold, and Tesla argues it is not seen as a usage fee and does not discourage unnecessary driving. Tesla acknowledged there would be "justifiable" community pushback, while experts have separately floated a charge of three cents per kilometre as fairer funding as electric and hybrid vehicles use less or no fuel.

Why it matters

A per-kilometre charge applied to every vehicle would change the running cost case for EV drivers, which could influence charging demand and utilisation assumptions in site business cases. CPOs and bidders should track the committee process, as the final design and timing could affect pricing strategy and long-term revenue forecasts.

Hypothetical comparison puts Santa Clara electricity bills at $180 a month against $410 in San Jose

A hypothetical comparison by local real estate agent Steve Mun, reported by The Cool Down, set two similar 1,500 square foot homes with central air conditioning and nightly EV charging at $180 a month in Santa Clara and $410 in San Jose. The $230 monthly gap would come to $2,760 a year. Santa Clara is served by the municipal Silicon Valley Power, while most San Jose homes receive delivery through investor-owned PG&E, and the comparison is illustrative rather than a record of real household bills.

Why it matters

Home charging economics vary sharply by utility, which affects driver demand for public charging and the pricing that CPOs can sustain in different service areas. Procurement and site selection teams should check local tariff structures rather than assume statewide averages.

French survey finding that 57% do not want an electric car is questioned over its methodology

DiscoverCars published a survey on 21 October on how fuel prices affect driver habits, and one figure for France was that 57% of French respondents say they are not currently considering a hybrid or electric car. The survey rests on 1,110 international responses gathered in September from customers of the car rental comparison site, and the French sample size is not given, so no national margin of error can be calculated. The coverage notes that no quotas, weighting, response rate or random sampling are described, so the figure reflects a group of rental platform customers rather than French drivers as a whole.

Why it matters

Headlines claiming French drivers reject electric cars can shape political and investor sentiment, but this one cannot be generalised from the published data. Procurement teams and CPOs should rely on registration, usage and representative panel data when judging French demand, not this survey.
