California awards $55.2 million for public DC fast charging expansion

The California Energy Commission announced $55.2 million in funding through the California Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Project on 28 May to expand public DC fast charging across the state. The programme offers rebates of $55,000 per port and is expected to support up to 1,000 new DC charging ports, with priority given to projects in low income, disadvantaged and tribal communities. California currently operates over 201,000 public EV chargers, though most are Level 2 units rather than fast chargers.
Why it matters: The funding addresses a critical infrastructure gap for long distance EV travel and signals continued public investment to de risk fast charging deployment. Procurement teams and charge point operators can access rebates that materially reduce upfront capital costs, particularly in underserved communities where private investment has lagged.
