Pune to trial electric double-decker buses on 10 routes from 21 July
By Eve
Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Ltd. (PMPML) will begin a fresh trial of electric double-decker buses on 21 July across 10 routes, including Hadapsar to Wagholi and Hadapsar to Swargate, focusing on corridors without Bus Rapid Transit or Metro connectivity. The trial will assess road width, flyover clearances, overhead power lines, and traffic conditions to determine operational feasibility, as well as measure passenger response before any wider rollout decision. PMPML plans to add 1,715 new buses to its fleet by year end.
Why it matters: The trial signals potential procurement of electric double-decker buses for Pune's public transport network, creating opportunities for EV bus suppliers and charging infrastructure providers. Successful testing could lead to a significant fleet expansion beyond the 1,715 buses already planned, requiring depot charging solutions and route optimisation expertise.
