Rivian's Commercial Van Outsells Its R1S and R1T Combined in Q3

By Eve

Rivian's Commercial Van (RCV) was the company's best-selling model in the third quarter of this year, with 8,469 units sold between July and September, a 220.9% increase on the same period last year, according to Cox Automotive data. The van also outsold the R1S and R1T combined and every other electric van rival in the United States, placing it fourth among the country's best-selling EVs behind the Tesla Model Y, Tesla Model 3 and Hyundai Ioniq 5. Year to date to 30 September, Rivian has sold 15,685 vans, up 130.4% from 6,806 a year earlier.

Why it matters

Commercial EV volumes are growing fastest where fleet buyers are active, which strengthens the case for depot and fleet charging investment. Charge point operators bidding for fleet contracts should note that the rivals to Rivian's van trailed by a wide margin, with the next-best electric van selling 1,344 units, so the sites these vehicles depend on are likely to be concentrated in a few large fleet customers.

UBS Upgrades Rivian to Buy as R2 Ramp and Margin Recovery Come Into Focus

UBS upgraded Rivian Automotive to Buy from Neutral on November 2 and kept a $17 price target, lifting the stock 4% to $12.59 in morning trading, though it remains down 36% year to date. The move follows Rivian's Q3 2026 report, in which revenue rose 38.3% year on year to $2.155 billion and the adjusted loss of $0.48 per share beat expectations, with the company also raising its full-year guidance to 67,000 to 70,000 vehicles. Automotive gross loss still stood at $80 million, helped by a tariff refund receivable and $81 million in regulatory credits, so the bull case depends heavily on the lower-priced R2 SUV and its margin trajectory.

Why it matters

For charging operators and procurement teams, Rivian's R2 volume and gross margin progress will determine how quickly its fleet and home-charging demand scales in the United States. Its reliance on regulatory credits to offset automotive losses is a reminder that near-term EV volumes remain sensitive to policy support.

AutoTrader reviews imported Rivian R1T in the UK and finds it an awkward fit but an enthusiastic favourite

AutoTrader's Rory Reid drove an imported first generation Rivian R1T, with its quad motor setup peaking at 835 horsepower, through British villages, parking spaces and a drive-through. At roughly 18 feet long, the truck is hard to manoeuvre on tighter roads, and its left-hand drive position makes overtaking harder. Despite this, the reviewer praised its comfort, features and well-controlled body roll, while noting its weight can be heard in faster bends.

Why it matters

Imported large electric pickups like the R1T are appearing on UK roads, which raises practical questions about bay sizes, access and layout at charging sites. CPOs and site designers may want to consider how oversized vehicles fit into standard parking and charging spaces.

Rivian reports stronger Amazon demand for its EDV commercial van

Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe told an earnings call this week that the company has seen a significant step up in demand from Amazon for its EDV delivery van, with revenue from Amazon nearly tripling this year. Scaringe said Amazon, an early Rivian investor, is buying more vans because of their lower running costs. The report sets this alongside Rivian's announcement that its R2 crossover, which reached the market in June and is eventually set to cost $45,000, was its best selling vehicle in the third quarter.

Why it matters

More EDVs in Amazon's delivery fleet in the United States points to growing demand for depot charging at logistics sites. Charge point operators and installers serving last mile fleets should watch for related procurement.
