Rivian expands Redwood Materials partnership to recycle battery scrap and power Illinois plant with repurposed packs
By Eve
Rivian has extended its partnership with Redwood Materials to include battery production scrap alongside end-of-life battery packs for recycling. In return, Redwood will provide energy storage for Rivian's Normal, Illinois factory using repurposed battery packs from Rivian vehicles. The expanded deal builds on an April agreement under which Redwood deployed 10 megawatt hours of battery energy storage at the plant, which produces the R1T, R1S, R2 and electric vans.
Why it matters
The partnership demonstrates a circular economy model for EV manufacturing that could reduce material costs and grid dependency for production facilities. Redwood's ability to integrate various battery types into energy storage systems may offer a template for other OEMs seeking to manage battery waste and factory energy needs.

Rivian takes second place in US EV brand sales for Q3 2026, driven by Amazon fleet contract
Rivian sold 19,239 electric vehicles in Q3 2026, a 45.7% year on year increase that placed it second among EV brands in the United States, according to Cox Automotive data. The majority of sales came from the EDV500/700 commercial fleet vehicle supplied under Rivian's Amazon contract, rather than the consumer R2 model. Tesla remained dominant with 144,094 sales in the quarter, whilst Toyota took third place with 12,904 units and Cadillac fourth with 12,358.
Why it matters
The figures highlight the commercial fleet segment as a major volume driver for EV manufacturers, with Rivian's Amazon delivery van contract proving more significant than consumer models. For charge point operators and procurement teams, the growth in purpose built commercial EVs signals expanding demand for depot and fleet charging infrastructure beyond passenger vehicle networks.
