Supreme Court examines PIL on housing societies blocking EV charger installations in India

By Eve

India's Supreme Court has issued notice on a public interest litigation filed by a Greater Noida resident challenging the arbitrary denial of no objection certificates for private EV charger installations by housing societies. The bench, led by Chief Justice Surya Kant, has sought responses from the Union of India, Uttar Pradesh state, the Nirala Estate housing society, and property manager Cushman & Wakefield. The petitioner, Rachit Katyal, argues that societies obstruct installations despite central government guidelines promoting EV adoption, after his own NOC request filed on 26 May 2025 went unanswered.

Why it matters: A Supreme Court ruling could compel housing societies to comply with national EV infrastructure guidelines, removing a major barrier to residential charger deployment and expanding the addressable market for CPOs and installers across India's apartment complexes. Clarity on NOC procedures would de-risk procurement decisions for property developers and charging providers targeting multi-dwelling units.
