Solar and batteries cut summer wholesale power costs by about $6.05 billion in Texas and California, but delivery charges limited bill relief

By Eve

SEIA data reported by ESS News estimated energy savings of $3.55 billion in Texas and $2.5 billion in California, comparing June to August 2026 with the same months in 2021, in 2026 dollars. Texas wholesale prices fell 42% to $31.77 per megawatt hour from $54.97 while demand rose 30.1%, and California prices fell 51% to $38.32 from $77.54 with consumption up 2.5%. The generation portion of residential bills dropped 10% in California and 4% in Texas, but higher charges elsewhere on the bills absorbed part of the saving.

Why it matters

Cheaper wholesale power from solar and batteries supports the case for lower energy costs at charging sites, but rising delivery charges show that savings may not reach customers in full. CPOs and procurement teams should model grid and network costs alongside wholesale prices when assessing site economics and tariffs.

Octopus Energy signs MoU with CATL's Ampace to develop next generation smart home batteries

Octopus Energy and Xiamen Ampace Technology have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to explore smart home energy storage that pairs high-performance hardware with intelligent software. The work will draw on CATL and Ampace research into sodium-ion technology, high-density cell designs and ultra-long lifecycle systems, combined with Octopus's software platform, smart tariffs and Virtual Power Plant capabilities. The collaboration will initially explore opportunities across European markets where Octopus has retail energy offices, according to the announcement.

Why it matters

Connected home batteries that charge when energy is cleanest and cheapest and export at peak times add to the flexibility pool that charging operators and fleet depots compete with and can partner with. Lower cost chemistries such as sodium-ion could also reshape the economics of paired storage at charging sites, though the MoU is exploratory and commits to no products or volumes yet.

DTEK restored power to more than 6.7 million families in October after Russian attacks

According to a Ukrainian-language report, DTEK crews restored electricity in October to more than 6.7 million families in Kyiv, and the Kyiv, Odesa, Dnipropetrovsk and Donetsk regions, fully or partly reconnecting over 2,200 settlements. Kyiv accounted for more than 2 million homes, Donetsk region 1.47 million, Dnipropetrovsk region 1.42 million, Kyiv region almost 1 million and Odesa region 812,800. DTEK said repair work starts only after clearance from the armed forces and the State Emergency Service, and that overnight on 31 October Russian forces again struck energy sites in Dnipropetrovsk region, seriously damaging equipment at two DTEK Dnipro Electric Networks facilities.

Why it matters

Repeated damage to distribution networks in these regions affects grid reliability and connection timelines for any charging project in Ukraine. Developers and CPOs should factor in supply interruption risk, on-site resilience and access constraints when planning sites and contracts.

DTE Energy and Sonnen to link nearly 100 home batteries in Michigan's first residential virtual power plant pilot

DTE Energy and battery manufacturer Sonnen will coordinate nearly 100 home batteries in Ann Arbor, Michigan, in a two year pilot announced on 29 October and approved by the Michigan Public Service Commission. The batteries sit in Thrive Collaborative's carbon neutral Veridian at County Farm development, and DTE will assess whether coordinated storage can lower system costs, improve reliability and meet peak demand more cheaply than building new capacity. The details come from a DTE and Sonnen news release published by The Manila Times and reported by The Cool Down.

Why it matters

Utilities testing aggregated residential storage as an alternative to new capacity signals a growing focus on flexible, coordinated load and supply, which can shape how charging sites are planned, connected and priced in the same networks. CPOs and procurement teams should watch the pilot's findings for what they mean for peak demand management and grid support models.
