Southern Railway installs battery swapping stations at 21 Chennai suburban stations after 2023 charging rollout failed

Southern Railway has deployed battery swapping facilities at 21 stations across Chennai's suburban network, including Central, Egmore, Velachery and Taramani, under five year contracts expected to generate Rs 53.43 lakh in annual licence fees. The move follows a largely defunct 2023 EV charging rollout with Ather Energy, where chargers became non functional and disappeared from operator apps due to poor maintenance.
