E-retrofits could accelerate European bus electrification by 15 years, Empa study finds

Research by Switzerland's Empa shows converting diesel buses to battery-electric drivetrains could advance full electrification of Europe's bus fleet by around 15 years. City buses typically operate for 20 years, meaning a 2035 zero-emission mandate would not deliver 95% electrification until 2057. E-retrofitting replaces engines, gearboxes, fuel tanks and exhaust systems while retaining bodies, chassis and interiors, allowing operators to electrify functional vehicles without premature replacement.
Why it matters: The 15 year acceleration offers procurement teams and CPOs an alternative pathway to meet climate targets without scrapping serviceable assets. Retrofit programmes could reshape fleet renewal budgets and create demand for conversion services alongside new vehicle orders.
