Tesla opens Heat Pump Optimization to Powerwall 3 and Powerwall 3P owners in Europe

By Eve

Tesla Energy has made its Heat Pump Optimization feature available to Powerwall 3 and Powerwall 3P owners in Europe, as reported by Drive Tesla Canada and republished by The Cool Down. The feature lets a compatible heat pump raise its output when solar generation is in surplus or electricity is cheap, so heat can be stored for later use. Compatible units must accept commands from a separate controller, which Tesla's installation guide describes as Smart Grid Ready, or SG-Ready, heat pumps.

Why it matters

Home batteries are being used to shift other large electrical loads, not only EV charging, which affects how residential demand and tariff response are managed on the same sites. Installers and CPOs working on home or small commercial energy projects should note the SG-Ready requirement and the growing competition for cheap and surplus energy within the building.

Tesla urges Australia to apply a road user charge to all vehicles alongside fuel excise

In its submission to the federal Select Committee on Productivity in Australia, Tesla recommended a distance-based road user charge, set in cents per kilometre, for all vehicles, to sit alongside the current fuel excise. The excise adds around 51 cents to each litre of petrol and diesel sold, and Tesla argues it is not seen as a usage fee and does not discourage unnecessary driving. Tesla acknowledged there would be "justifiable" community pushback, while experts have separately floated a charge of three cents per kilometre as fairer funding as electric and hybrid vehicles use less or no fuel.

Why it matters

A per-kilometre charge applied to every vehicle would change the running cost case for EV drivers, which could influence charging demand and utilisation assumptions in site business cases. CPOs and bidders should track the committee process, as the final design and timing could affect pricing strategy and long-term revenue forecasts.

UBS Upgrades Rivian to Buy as R2 Ramp and Margin Recovery Come Into Focus

UBS upgraded Rivian Automotive to Buy from Neutral on November 2 and kept a $17 price target, lifting the stock 4% to $12.59 in morning trading, though it remains down 36% year to date. The move follows Rivian's Q3 2026 report, in which revenue rose 38.3% year on year to $2.155 billion and the adjusted loss of $0.48 per share beat expectations, with the company also raising its full-year guidance to 67,000 to 70,000 vehicles. Automotive gross loss still stood at $80 million, helped by a tariff refund receivable and $81 million in regulatory credits, so the bull case depends heavily on the lower-priced R2 SUV and its margin trajectory.

Why it matters

For charging operators and procurement teams, Rivian's R2 volume and gross margin progress will determine how quickly its fleet and home-charging demand scales in the United States. Its reliance on regulatory credits to offset automotive losses is a reminder that near-term EV volumes remain sensitive to policy support.

France's new car market grows 7.05% in October as electric cars reach 41.5% share and the new Renault Twingo leads EV registrations

French new private car registrations rose 7.05% in October to 149,345 vehicles, following an 11.6% rise in September. Battery-electric registrations jumped 81.7% in the month, while petrol registrations fell 44.2% and hybrid registrations also declined. Electric cars took a 41.5% share in October, broadly in line with September, and 32.5% year to date against 18.9% in 2025. The new Renault Twingo topped the EV ranking with 4,747 registrations, narrowly ahead of the Renault 5 on 4,666, while the Renault Scénic placed fourth with 3,037, up 82% year on year.

Why it matters

With electric cars now taking more than four in ten new registrations, charge point demand from fleets and private drivers is growing quickly, and the Renault models leading the ranking are the ones CPOs should prioritise when planning home, workplace and public charging provision.
