Tesla adds solar and tariff aware charging to Gen 3 Wall Connector via Powerwall integration

By Eve

Tesla's firmware version 26.34 enables its Gen 3 Wall Connector to coordinate with Powerwall systems for smart charging based on solar generation and utility rates. In Savings mode, the charger uses time of use tariffs and solar output to schedule low cost charging, while Self Powered mode directs surplus solar to the vehicle battery. The feature extends to older Powerwall 2 units as well as newer installations.

Why it matters

Home charging hardware that responds to solar availability and dynamic tariffs could reduce grid demand during peak periods and improve the business case for residential solar plus storage installations. For CPOs and installers, it signals growing integration between vehicle charging, energy storage and tariff optimisation in the domestic segment.

Rivian takes second place in US EV brand sales for Q3 2026, driven by Amazon fleet contract

Rivian sold 19,239 electric vehicles in Q3 2026, a 45.7% year on year increase that placed it second among EV brands in the United States, according to Cox Automotive data. The majority of sales came from the EDV500/700 commercial fleet vehicle supplied under Rivian's Amazon contract, rather than the consumer R2 model. Tesla remained dominant with 144,094 sales in the quarter, whilst Toyota took third place with 12,904 units and Cadillac fourth with 12,358.

Why it matters

The figures highlight the commercial fleet segment as a major volume driver for EV manufacturers, with Rivian's Amazon delivery van contract proving more significant than consumer models. For charge point operators and procurement teams, the growth in purpose built commercial EVs signals expanding demand for depot and fleet charging infrastructure beyond passenger vehicle networks.

Tesla secures 90% of output from 450 MW Arizona solar plant before construction starts

ContourGlobal launched construction of Project Sterling, a 450 MW solar facility with battery storage in Mohave County, Arizona, on 6 October. Tesla has already committed to purchasing approximately 90% of the plant's future output. The site will cover more than 800 hectares and feature over 760,000 solar panels, with commissioning expected in 2028.

Why it matters

The deal shows a major EV maker locking in clean generation capacity years ahead of delivery, a model that could inform how charge point operators secure renewable power for large scale networks in Europe and beyond.

Tesla owner completes Alaska camping loop for $190 despite limited charging past Anchorage

A Tesla Model Y Long Range owner completed a late August camping trip from Anchorage to Denali to Seward and back for approximately $190 in charging costs, averaging 3.5 miles per kilowatt hour. The journey relied on new Superchargers on the Anchorage to Denali route and four 50 kilowatt Recharge Alaska dispensers between Anchorage and Seward after a ChargePoint fast charger in Seward became inoperative. Anchorage has only one Supercharger location, where vandals had cut cables on half the dispensers.

Why it matters

The account highlights both infrastructure gaps and resilience in remote US charging networks, showing that strategic placement of mid power chargers can enable long distance EV travel even where coverage is sparse. Cable vandalism at the sole Anchorage Supercharger underscores security and redundancy challenges for charge point operators expanding into lower density markets.
