Self-charging EVs could reshape infrastructure planning by early 2030s

A new analysis argues that autonomous charging capability, where vehicles drive themselves to chargers and plug in, may become standard in new EVs by the early 2030s. Tesla's Full Self Driving system already navigates to charging stalls under supervision in version 14, and similar features are in development at Rivian, Xpeng and BYD. More than half of EVs on the road are Teslas, meaning the existing hardware base (particularly HW3) could support low-speed autonomous charging in controlled environments.
Why it matters: If self-charging becomes widespread, it could fundamentally alter site design, utilisation patterns and business models for charge point operators, potentially reducing the need for premium locations and enabling higher asset utilisation through overnight or off-peak autonomous sessions. Procurement teams may need to factor autonomous-vehicle access and automated payment systems into specifications within the next decade.
