Uganda targets 3,500 public charging stations and 10,000 fast chargers by 2040

Uganda has announced plans to deploy at least 3,500 public EV charging stations and over 10,000 fast chargers by 2040, according to transport regulation and safety commissioner Winston Katushabe at a high level meeting on 28 April 2026 in Kampala. The meeting, led by State House Investors Protection Unit head Col. Edith Nakalema, convened government officials, development partners and automotive industry stakeholders to tackle infrastructure gaps, policy alignment and investment challenges in the e-mobility sector.

Why it matters: The 2040 target signals a major procurement opportunity in East Africa, with Uganda planning a nationwide charging network to support its shift from fossil fuel vehicles. CPOs and infrastructure suppliers now have a 14 year window to engage with Ugandan authorities on site rollout and fast charging deployment.
