UK car sales hit post-Covid high for May as Chinese EV makers gain ground

By Eve

UK new car registrations reached a post-pandemic high in May, with Chinese electric vehicle manufacturers increasing their market share. The growth reflects broader recovery in the automotive sector and the expanding presence of brands from China in the British market.

Why it matters

Rising EV sales from Chinese manufacturers signals intensifying competition for charging infrastructure partnerships and may influence site planning as CPOs assess which vehicle platforms and customer bases to prioritise in network deployment.

Tesla and 12 operators oppose Australian rule allowing power distributors to own EV chargers

A coalition including Tesla, Evie Networks, AGL Energy and Master Electricians Australia has written to oppose a draft rule by Australia's energy market regulator that would permit power distribution networks such as Ausgrid and CitiPower to install and operate public EV chargers, with costs passed to consumers via electricity bills. The initial trial covers 14,000 curbside chargers. The coalition supports EV infrastructure but rejects network ownership funded through bills, arguing the regulator has not established the case for this model.

Why it matters

The rule change could reshape Australia's charging market by allowing regulated utilities to compete directly with private operators, potentially altering procurement dynamics and funding structures. For CPOs and contractors, network ownership may limit commercial opportunities if infrastructure deployment shifts to monopoly distributors rather than competitive tender.

Tesla and Australian power retailers oppose grid operator EV charger rollout funded by household bills

Tesla, AGL, EnergyAustralia, Engie and private charge point operators including Evie Networks have written to local authorities opposing a plan that would allow power distributors to install 14,000 EV chargers on poles in regional and underserved areas, recovering 70 per cent of costs through regulated charges on all electricity bills. The Australian Energy Market Commission has given preliminary approval for the trial, which comes as EVs now represent one in four new vehicle sales in Australia. The industry coalition warns the scheme risks higher household costs for uncertain benefits.

Why it matters

The dispute highlights a fundamental tension over who should fund public charging infrastructure and whether regulated monopolies or competitive private operators should lead the rollout. For CPOs and procurement teams, the outcome will shape market access, competitive dynamics and the viability of commercial charging projects in regional Australia.

Tesla registers 993 vehicles in India from September 2025 to September 2026, with September 2026 hitting record 294 units

Tesla has registered 993 cars in India since deliveries began in September 2025, according to data from Indian publication ElecTree. The company registered just 69 units in its first month and finished 2025 with 226 registrations, adding only 202 between January and May 2026. September 2026 saw a record 294 registrations following price cuts and the launch of the six seat Model Y L at ₹61.99 lakh (approximately $65,000), down from the original Model Y launch price of roughly $70,000 in July 2025.

Why it matters

The slow uptake and reliance on imports, confirmed after India's government said Tesla will not build a local factory, signals limited near term charging infrastructure demand tied to Tesla's proprietary network in the market. The September 2026 uptick may indicate whether lower pricing can drive enough volume to justify third party charging investment in Indian metros.
