Agratas secures £380m government funding for Somerset gigafactory to supply Jaguar Land Rover

By Eve

Agratas has secured £380 million in UK government funding for its Somerset battery gigafactory, which is expected to create around 4,200 jobs and contribute an estimated £43 billion to the economy over 25 years. The facility will produce battery cells for anchor customer Jaguar Land Rover and is positioned to become one of Europe's largest gigafactories. A dedicated training centre will deliver around 300 apprenticeships in battery manufacturing and engineering, with over 2,200 people expected to work on site within the next year.

Why it matters: Large scale domestic battery production reduces supply chain risk for UK automotive OEMs and creates a stable procurement environment for charging infrastructure operators planning fleet electrification projects. The facility's scale and JLR anchor contract signal strengthening UK EV manufacturing capacity that will drive increased demand for charging infrastructure across commercial and public networks.
