Volkswagen to restart IG Metall talks on 24 November as operating profit falls to €8.9 billion

By Eve

Volkswagen Group will begin negotiations with IG Metall on 24 November 2026 after terminating wage provisions covering more than 100,000 workers at its German factories on 30 September 2026. The company's operating profit dropped from €22.6 billion in 2023 to €8.9 billion in 2025, prompting plans to close up to four German plants, cut 50,000 domestic jobs and 100,000 globally over four years. Volkswagen expects its austerity measures to deliver €20 billion in savings across its value chain by 2030 and reduce overhead costs by €11 billion.

Why it matters

Major restructuring at Europe's largest carmaker could reshape procurement priorities and supplier relationships as Volkswagen halves its model range and consolidates production. The labour dispute follows a similar 2024 standoff that led to 35,000 job cuts, signalling potential disruption to manufacturing capacity and capital allocation for electrification projects.

Volkswagen launches ID. UNYX 09 electric sedan in China with 755 km range and 5C fast charging

Volkswagen has launched the ID. UNYX 09 electric fastback in China, priced from 179,900 yuan (approximately $26,800), with a limited time promotional price of 169,900 yuan ($25,460) for 500 vehicles. The model offers up to 755 km of range and features 5C fast charging technology, using a 91.963 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery from CATL and driver assistance systems developed with Chinese partner Xpeng. The vehicle is available in three configurations across rear wheel drive and all wheel drive options, with the promotional pricing valid for deposits paid between 24 October and 30 November 2026.

Why it matters

The 5C charging capability and large battery capacity signal growing infrastructure requirements for ultra fast charging networks in China's competitive EV market. Volkswagen's partnership with CATL on high power battery technology may influence charging hardware specifications and grid connection standards as OEMs push charging speeds beyond current 3C to 4C norms.

FAW-Volkswagen's Jetta M6 electric sedan draws 10,000 orders in 19 hours at $11,900 starting price

The Jetta M6, launched on 22 October by FAW-Volkswagen's budget brand for the Chinese market, received over 10,000 orders within 19 hours. Priced from approximately $11,900 to $14,900, the sedan offers two battery options from CALB: a 42.9 kWh LFP pack with 465 km CLTC range and a 51.9 kWh version delivering 555 km range. The top specification includes advanced driver assistance powered by Horizon Robotics Journey 6M chip and GAIA 2.0 World Model infrastructure, with the company pledging to cover collision costs linked to the system within the first year of ownership.

Why it matters

The rapid uptake signals strong demand for affordable electric vehicles in China's competitive market, where procurement teams and fleet operators increasingly prioritise cost effective EV options. CALB's battery supply deal and the integration of Horizon Robotics technology highlight key partnerships shaping the budget EV segment's supply chain.

Volkswagen launches ID. Cross with 37 kWh LFP battery at €27,995 in France, €9,805 below NMC variant

Volkswagen began taking orders in France in mid October for a new ID. Cross variant with a 37 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery priced from €27,995, compared to €37,800 for the 52 kWh nickel manganese cobalt version launched in summer 2026. The €9,805 price difference stems primarily from the cheaper LFP chemistry, which avoids costly nickel and cobalt, rather than battery size alone. LFP cells tolerate daily charging to 100% and handle repeated charge cycles better than NMC, but offer lower energy density and reduced cold weather performance.

Why it matters

The shift to lower cost LFP batteries in mass market EVs will influence charging infrastructure planning, as operators may see increased demand for daily top up charging to 100% rather than the 80% limit typical for NMC vehicles. Fleet and workplace charging providers targeting budget conscious EV buyers should anticipate different usage patterns from LFP equipped vehicles.
