Walmart and US retail chains expand EV charging networks despite federal funding pause

By Eve

Major American retailers including Walmart, Buc-ee's and Circle K are deploying fast-charging networks on company-owned sites, using white-label services and new financing models to reduce upfront capital costs. The rollout has accelerated over the past 18 months even as the second Trump administration paused the $5 billion National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) programme in early 2025, stalling hundreds of planned projects. Industry observers describe the trend as the Great American EV-charging build-out, driven by retailers capturing customer data and betting on long-term EV adoption.

Why it matters: The shift to private retail-led charging infrastructure creates new procurement opportunities outside traditional NEVI-funded corridors, with white-label and turnkey models lowering barriers for property owners. CPOs and suppliers must adapt commercial strategies as retailers prioritise branded networks and customer loyalty over public grant-dependent projects.
