India logs record 327,901 EV sales in July as infrastructure pressure mounts

India recorded its highest monthly EV retail sales in July 2026 with 327,901 units, up 66% year on year, according to Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations data. EVs represented nearly one in eight vehicles sold, with electric two wheelers crossing 200,000 units for the first time and passenger EV sales rising 83% to 32,928 units. August maintained momentum with 298,448 EVs retailed, a 52.9% annual increase, as the country marked World EV Day on 9 September under the theme of driving down motoring costs.
Why it matters: Rapid sales growth is shifting procurement focus from vehicle adoption to charging infrastructure capacity, as mainstream buyers now prioritise charging access and running costs over the vehicle itself. Fleet operators expanding electrification in the commercial and three wheeler segments will intensify demand for reliable charging networks across urban and intercity routes.
