Xiaomi launches robotic EV charging arm for automated home charging, reviving undelivered Tesla concept

By Eve

Xiaomi Corp. has launched a fully automated robotic arm that plugs into and unplugs from parked electric vehicles without human assistance, with mass production preparations complete and a launch planned for later this year according to CarNewsChina. The device supports remote charging control via smartphone and will join Xiaomi's consumer product ecosystem. Tesla showed a similar prototype in 2015 but never brought an automated charging product to market despite CEO Elon Musk announcing plans in 2014.

Why it matters

The product represents the first mass market automated charging hardware from a major manufacturer, potentially creating new procurement opportunities for residential charging infrastructure that reduces user friction. Xiaomi's move into automated charging equipment may pressure other hardware suppliers to develop competing solutions for the home charging segment.

Tesla delivers 486,532 electric vehicles in Q3 2026, down 2.1% year on year but beating analyst forecasts

Tesla delivered 486,532 electric vehicles globally between July and September 2026, a 2.1% decline from the 497,099 units delivered in Q3 2025, according to quarterly results. The year on year comparison is skewed by Q3 2025's artificially inflated US sales, driven by buyers rushing to claim a $7,500 federal tax credit before its removal. Despite the modest annual decline, Tesla's Q3 2026 deliveries exceeded analyst expectations and the company appears to have improved inventory management.

Why it matters

Tesla's delivery volumes signal underlying EV demand trends and influence charging infrastructure planning by CPOs and site hosts. The company's ability to beat forecasts despite losing a major US purchase incentive suggests resilient demand that could sustain charging network expansion investments.

Tesla Powerwall autonomously grid-charged before peak rates to offset low solar yield in Arizona

A Tesla Powerwall owner in Tucson, Arizona, reported that the battery began charging from the grid at around 2:30 p.m. on a rainy day, ahead of a 3 to 7 p.m. peak rate window, after solar generation fell short. The homeowner had set the system to Saving mode and disabled Stormwatch, allowing the Powerwall to draw enough grid power to cover the high cost period. The case, shared on Reddit's r/Powerwall forum, illustrates how residential storage can automatically balance low renewable output with time of use tariffs.

Why it matters

The example shows demand side flexibility in action, with home batteries responding to tariff signals and weather conditions without manual intervention. For CPOs and utilities, it underscores the growing role of behind the meter storage in load shifting and the need for rate structures that reward or integrate such behaviour at scale.

Tesla enables bidirectional charging for new Model 3 and Model Y orders in US with Powerwall 3

Tesla has extended its PowerShare home backup feature to new Model 3 and Model Y vehicles ordered from 1 October 2026 onwards in the US and Puerto Rico, previously available only on the Cybertruck. The capability requires a Powerwall 3 home battery and compatible charger, with Tesla stating the setup can extend home backup by over two days using the vehicle's battery.

Why it matters

This marks a significant expansion of vehicle to home charging infrastructure in the residential market, potentially driving demand for integrated Tesla energy systems. For charging point operators and installers, it signals growing competition from OEM controlled bidirectional solutions that bypass third party hardware.
