EVs hit 25.8 per cent of new vehicle sales in Australia as first half 2026 sees 158,000 units sold

Australians purchased 157,957 battery electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles in the first half of 2026, a 117 per cent increase on the same period in 2025, according to the Electric Vehicle Council's State of EVs 2026 report launched by Federal Minister Chris Bowen. EVs accounted for 25.8 per cent of all new vehicle sales from January to June, up from 12.1 per cent a year earlier, with the national fleet surpassing 500,000 vehicles in March and reaching approximately 612,000 by end June. The EVC attributed growth to stronger competition, greater vehicle availability supported by the National Vehicle Efficiency Standard, the expanding charging network and the Electric Car Discount.

Why it matters

A quarter share of new vehicle sales signals sustained demand for charging infrastructure across Australia, with over 612,000 EVs now requiring network capacity. Rapid fleet growth and policy support create a clear pipeline for CPOs and contractors bidding on public and private charging projects.
